How to Replace T8 Or T12 Lights With New Energy Efficient T5 Lighting

T5 compact lighting has given T8 and T12 users an energy efficient option to fluorescent lighting. Fluorescent lights can be used in many ways and places but are most commonly found in offices, schools, hospitals, warehouses, and retail spaces. Regular fluorescent lights or T8 and T12 are now becoming obsolete. The new T5's are 16mm wide, almost half the size of T12 lights. This makes them much thinner then regular fluorescent lights. Manufacturers created the T5 line to compete in the compact fluorescent lighting market. T5 bulbs reduce consumption of power by about 50% while still providing the same output of light as regular fluorescent lights.

Luckily manufacturers have also come up with an easy way to change out existing T8 and T12 bulbs for T5 bulbs using conversion kits. These kits allow you to use T5 bulbs in existing strip light fixtures. You can choose to remove the existing strip light fixtures and replace them with T5 specific fixtures.

Lights Outdoor

How does the energy efficiency aspect breakdown? A 35 watt T5 bulb can replace a 58 watt T12 bulb and still supply the same amount of light. This is how they calculated the average 50% energy savings. A T5 light bulb usually lasts at least 15,000 hours losing only about 5% output in its life. A T8 light bulb usually lasts about 9,000 hours but it loses about 20% output in its life. T5 light bulbs will not need to be replaced as often as T8 and T12 bulbs so they will need less maintenance and save you money on that department also.

Although T5 lights cost more than T8 and T12 lights do, the conversion kits can save you about 70% of the cost of actually replacing the fixtures. The T5 conversion kits can easily be installed right along with the bulbs. Clip-on reflectors can also be used with T5 lighting to enhance the fixtures light output.

Replacing and updating your existing fixtures to T5 standards is fairly simple thanks to conversion kits. T5 kits will cost more initially but will save you money in the long run. Thanks to the manufacturers of T5 fluorescent bulbs, making the change to energy efficiency is a painless and simple move.

Craft Projects With Glass Blocks and Lights

When it comes to craft projects, glass blocks are amazingly versatile. There are so many fun and interesting ways to decorate with them in every room of the house.

Once you could only find glass or art deco blocks at home improvement centers. There were solid and in order to put lights or objects inside, you had to use a large drill bit and a complicated process to get them "open" - if you choose to do this - consider hiring this out to a professional. Now you can find glass bricks conveniently at your local crafts store with one side left open. You can even use these wonderful finds as vases. They are generally available in two sizes and I've seen them available all year.

Lights Outdoor

Take a look at these top 10 ways to use lighted glass bricks to bring soft illumination, charm, and beauty to your home.

Faux gifts - Fill two bricks with Christmas lights. One should be smaller than the other. Stack them and then tie a large ribbon around the stack, completing the look with a bow on top. Voila, you have "gift boxes" for decorating during the holidays or simply for every day. (Or how cool for a baby shower or wedding!) Place the lit glass bricks under the tree, next to potted plants, on a windowsill or mantel, or decorate the foyer with them to welcome your guests. Paint the outside of a block with a design that will fit into your decorating scheme for that room. Put lights inside and you have added charm to the space! Nightlight - wonderful idea for a child's room. Add decals, stickers, or a painted scene on one side of the glass brick. Insert Christmas lights inside. Place on a shelf or dresser and turn on at night for your child. They'll love it! Create a lighted village display - glass blocks can easily be transformed into a little village display. Paint each as a building - the post office, library, church, house, etc. Add fabric and other accents to make the glass squares look like the building it depicts. Fill each "building" with a string of Christmas lights and you have a lighted village display! This is a fun project to complete with your kids. Decorative paperweights - another way to decorate with glass bricks is to turn a small one into a decorative paperweight. Add your favorite embellishments or paint the block to match your office decor. The weight of your creation is perfect for keeping papers in place. Wedding decor - glass bricks with lights, tulle, and ribbon look absolutely stunning at a wedding reception. Fill the glass brick with lights. Attach gorgeous organza or wired ribbon around the edge of the brick. Nestle the bricks into mounds of "billowing" tulle and you have a beautiful decoration for your gift table, foyer, food table, cake table, or any other space you like. Window decor - instead of the traditional candles, place one lighted block into your window. It will illuminate the room softly and will look beautiful from the outside as well. Welcome sign - spell out the word "welcome" with glass bricks. These would be a perfect addition to a foyer or nursery. Or spell out other messages like "believe", "faith", "joy", etc. Lighted stand/base - decorate with blocks in any room of the house by using one as a stand or base for a display. Place a glass brick filled with a Christmas light string on a flat surface. Put small items on top of it such as small collectibles, candles (in another container), a vase of flowers, a small lamp, or anything else that would look pretty sitting a bit higher and illuminated. Ambiance - add a bit of romantic lighting to the master bedroom with a few lighted glass bricks strategically placed around the room. Decorate with ribbon to match your decor. As you can see, there are many possibilities when it comes to projects involving glass bricks. Let these ideas just be a starting off point for your home decoration and gift giving list.

How to Wire Outdoor Lights

There are plenty of reasons to put in some outdoor lighting. The biggest of course is security. A well-lit yard can help deter the lurking burglar. It's just an added bonus that outdoor lighting adds an elegant touch to the yard. If you're looking for a do it yourself project that will have a major impact while being an easy job, here's how to wire outdoor lights!

If you've spent any time in the home improvement store you've seen all the different lighting options available. They have everything from motion sensitive spotlights to solar powered accent lighting. Let's concentrate on wiring up some ground lighting.

Lights Outdoor

Before starting though, a few words of caution. Wiring up the lights is going to make a mess of your yard. You have to dig a trench for the direct burial wiring. Be sure to contact the utility companies to mark any buried cables.

The first step is to pick out the locations for the lights.

Once you have those marked out you can start planning a wiring schematic.

Your best bet is a parallel circuit. You don't want to have to worry about the dreaded Christmas light effect and having to hunt down that 1 bad bulb because you wired in series.

Depending on how long the wiring runs are to the power source you can either hand dig a trench or rent a powered trencher from a local rental company. Trenchers are a bit pricey but they more than pay for themselves if you have to deal with long runs, rocky soil, or tree roots.

Of course you want to avoid tearing up the yard any more than required so start your 1st trench furthest away from the house.

The trenches for the other lights should all feed into this main trench.

There are electrical codes involved depending on your community. Be sure you're digging a hole deep enough! Most require a minimum of 2 feet deep for direct burial cable.

Digging was the hardest part. The rest is cake.

Be sure you're using a direct burial cable. This has special insulation that keeps it from shorting out. Lay the wire out in the trench and cut. Be sure to leave enough excess to wire the lights and run back into the junction box in your home.

After all the cables are laid out you can start placing/wiring the lights.

Black wires to black for power, white to white for neutral and green to green for ground. Be sure to use waterproof connectors to ensure a nice tight weatherproof connection.

You're finished wiring up all the lights! Great you're almost finished now.

If you want all the lights to be on the same circuit (the same switch turns them all on) then twist all the black wires together, with the hot black lead from your home. BE SURE IT IS DENERGIZED! Repeat with the white and green wires.

Wire nut the 3 bundles and stuff them back into the electrical box then button it up.

Back fill and pack down the trenches you dug. Flip on the light switch and show the neighbors you know how to wire outdoor lights.

Outdoor Solar Lights - Reduce Energy Consumption For Your City

The U.S. has 13 million streetlights which use approximately 2 billion kWh of electricity per year and can eat up to 40% of a city's energy costs. At a time when municipalities and states are scrambling to meet budget requirements, the high cost of outdoor lighting becomes a serious issue.

Reducing this energy consumption saves electricity costs and increases renewable energy demand. With many states enacting plans to rely more heavily on renewable energy, solar lighting is one avenue to meet these goals. It's also handy for remote construction and work crews who depend on diesel-powered generators for electricity.

Lights Outdoor

Solar lights can replace any outdoor lighting from a household's porch light to a streetlight to a road sign or billboard spotlight. At the University of California and the National Institute of Standards and Technologies, solar panels on top of parking lot shelters light up the areas at night. Bus shelters and public parking lots in Florida and San Diego are lit using solar panels.

If you've driven down a mountain highway recently, you may have noticed road signs with a little black box perched on top. That solar panel box charges during the day, and lights the sign at night, eliminating the need for electricity in remote or rural areas.

Portable solar panel generators, such as GreenTow, have been developed to supply emergency response teams and remote construction sites with non-fossil fuel power. The panels can be towed to a site and generate energy to power generators with a diesel back-up in case of problems.

Outdoor solar lights can be more fun than a garage roof lining or a tow trailer. In Adelaide, Australia, solar light art called Solar Mallee Trees have been operating since 2005. They generate 864 kWh energy, while using only 125 kWh to light their surroundings. The extra electricity is put back into the grid for use elsewhere.

Pittsburgh, PA and Vienna, Italy have similar solar light constructs which tend to be in the shape of a tree or a flower with the petals and leaves sporting solar panels on one side and lights on the other. These types of lights contribute artistically to their cities, generate power for the grid, and reduce dependence on costly nonrenewable energy.

In every sector of the economy, energy efficiency is gaining importance both as a cost-saving solution and as a way to meet efficiency goals. Due to the public nature of this service, it's very citizen driven. Supporting your local community's efforts to replace inefficient outdoor lighting with solar technology will increase the dispersion of this practice as business as usual.

Outdoor Lighting - Discover the Many Benefits of Outdoor Lights

One of the easiest ways to add some much needed ambiance to your home is through the installation of outdoor lighting. There are many different ways that you can use outdoor lighting around your home. The most common use for outdoor lighting is that it can provide an added security feature to your home. These lights that are used for security around your home will most of the time be motion activated and will turn on when they are triggered by something or someone moving past. These lights can help keep your home and the surrounding area safe when you are both home and away.

Another use for outdoor lighting is to do just that; provide light. For example, if you are outside grilling on the back porch, you need some sort of light in order to see what you are doing. Without this kind of light you will not be able to see how the food is getting cooked. This means that you are guessing, and no one wants the person who is cooking their food to be guessing. This problem can be solved with simple light fixtures around the exterior of the home. In addition, putting these lights outside your home will allow you to be able to enjoy all the night time activities outside, such as swimming or hot tubs.

Lights Outdoor

There are many types of outdoor lights that you can use in a variety of ways. One of these types is called uplighting. This is where your fixtures are aimed upwards to accent and draw attention to specific areas of your home. Another type is downlighting. This type of lighting is used for putting a spotlight feature on certain designated areas around your home. Safety is a big concern for these lights. Zone lighting is another popular lighting form. This is where you will have various zones lit up around your home for such things as pools, gardens, flowers, plants, and other accentuated pieces.

There are some safety measures that you should take when doing this. First you should always have your wires in conduit, which encases them so that animals and the like will not be able to chew through them. Leave a little bit of wire around the fixtures so that in the event that you want to adjust them, you will be able to move them around freely.

Outdoor lights can be a wonderful thing to invest in. They will add so much more character to your home, and provide a whole new area for you to enjoy after the sun has gone down.

Outdoor Solar Garden Lights - Saving Money Can Be Colorful

Because of bad financial times, there is a new stream of consciousness for frugality. This could mean different things to different people, but those who are looking to maintain the allure of their home should consider fixtures that won't require a lot of money to maintain. Yet, the decor have to be stylish to keep up with the character.

If you live in a sunny part the world, like Southern California, Texas, or Florida, there is no reason not to capitalize in the availability of sunlight. Solar power, because of advancement in its technology, should be used to save money. Some cities even have grants to upgrade homes to solar energy. A solar powered generator may take a long time, but, just like anything else, it's good to begin with something simple. For example, start with yard lights.

Lights Outdoor

There are solar garden lights that you can use for yards that's pretty much right off-the-shelf in many retail or online stores. You just unwrap them, place them in your yard where there's plenty of sunshine, and they're good to go. They'll light up your yard at night and give your house a vivid character that will truly stand out.

Also, solar powered garden lights can help you penny pinch. Whatever light you are using to illuminate your pathway in the evening is likely utilizing electricity. It is not an option to discard the lights because of security. Plus, you or someone else might hurt themselves when walking around your yard in the dark.

The great thing about solar powered garden lights is that they gather energy from the sun during daytime and recycle them at night. They don't burn electricity and your bill will go down overtime. Of course, the more solar powered gadgets you use the less electricity you'll have to pay.

Another neat thing about solar lights for garden is they're available in various colors and designs. Ever seen how a rainbow looks in the dark? Well, neither have I, but it doesn't have to be costly. You can setup solar lights for your yard with rainbow colors -- blue, red, green, etc. You can even get the twinkling ones for a truly sensational display.

Also, if you're not so much into a potpourri of colors, more traditional colors, such as white and yellow are available as well. In either case, you're not using electricity to lighten up your driveway and your garden.

And lastly, solar powered garden lights vary in design to complement your style and personality. The more conservative ones can opt for old fashion street lamps that you see in black and white movies. The snazzier types can pick more modern designs. In all cases, the stainless steel and copper finish are popular.

So you see...saving money by going green doesn't have to be dull.

Solar Garden Lights - How to Change Batteries

Are your solar garden lights not working properly? Chances are the problem lies with the rechargeable battery in the solar power cell. Changing the battery on the solar light will give it new life.

Getting Started

Lights Outdoor

Before you start taking apart your solar garden light unit, you should consult the instructions or manual that came with it. Although the inner workings of these solar lights are essentially the same, the construction is usually different given the make and model. The instructions will also indicate the type of rechargeable battery provided with the unit, making it easier to locate the proper type of replacement battery. Under no circumstances should you replace the battery with a regular alkaline household battery. Alkaline batteries will damage the inner workings of the solar power cell and render the unit useless. Only use rechargeable batteries as replacements for your solar garden lights.

How do I change the batteries in my solar garden light?

Find a working area with good lighting and a place to set the pieces in order to reassemble it properly. As far as tools go, most units will require a couple of sizes of Phillips screwdrivers to take the unit apart and to put it together again. There are usually small screws, so have a small tray to hold these so you don't lose any while working on the solar garden light unit. Place the pieces in order when taking them apart. This will make it easier to put it together as you would just reassemble the unit in reverse order from taking it apart.

Once you have reached the battery, remove it from the solar light. You can try to recharge it in a household charger designed for that type of battery. Sometimes batteries do not charge all the way, especially if the solar garden light is placed in an area that does not receive full sun. This can shorten the lifespan of the battery. If the battery cannot be recharged, you should replace it. If the battery does recharge, replace it in the solar power cell and reassemble the solar garden light.

Where Can I Find Replacement Batteries for My Solar Garden Light?

As rechargeable batteries are becoming more popular, it is quite easy to find replacements. You will find them at most electronic stores in the section that sells batteries. There are a few kinds of rechargeable batteries. Any kind is acceptable, but you may want to replace them with the same kind you removed from your solar light. Look for a battery that will hold its charge for a long time. Life expectancy for most rechargeable batteries are 1-2 years. Replacing the rechargeable batteries in your solar garden light each year is recommended to get the most value out of your purchase.

Using Outdoor Flood Lights for Fun or Security

Spending time outside after dark can be a lot more enjoyable with the proper lighting. Outdoor flood lights, however, aren't always the best choice. Much depends on the activity you plan to do at night. Sports and other things that require you to be able to see very well, such as you can during the daytime, are good candidates for things like flood lighting. If you're having a garden party or gathering on your patio, then more subdued lighting is probably in order.

Flood lights are a good choice for heightened home security. These lights can be set to come on when they detect motion from something large like a person so that they don't go off every time a small nocturnal animal skitters past. Whether you use these lights for security or for fun outdoor activities, there are some things to consider before you install them.

Lights Outdoor

Be sure to consider where they will shine while they're on before you install them or have them installed. Will they be shining in the neighbor's window, for instance? This can become a nuisance and can cause problems between you and your neighbors. So make sure that you tilt it in such a way that it shines on your yard and not beyond it.

You'll also want to make sure you get a light that allows you to adjust the sensitivity of the motion detector, if you choose one for security purposes. If you can't adjust the sensitivity, you could find it blinking off and on all throughout the night as animals, leaves and sometimes even heavy rainstorms can set them off.

Choose the type you purchase carefully when you're shopping for outdoor flood lights. Some have one bulb while others have two or three that are situated at angles to cover a wider area. You might be able to find one fixture that can illuminate almost your entire yard if you choose one that has two or three bulbs and shades.

If you're really serious about home security, don't forget outdoor flood lights that have special features in them like infrared cameras. These are perfect if you already have a floodlight and you're having security issues. You simply change out your regular light for a model with an infrared camera inside the light. This allows you to see video of your outdoor spaces so you can keep an eye on your doors, windows, vehicles or yard. It's just one more option to consider when you're shopping for security lighting.

Yard Lighting Ideas - Add Lights to Your Yard

For decoration as well as function, the use of outdoor yard lights continues to gain popularity. Some great yard lighting ideas include: landscaping areas around the borders of your home, along pathways, or in garden areas.

Using decorative outdoor yard lights in landscaping adds beauty to your home at nighttime in addition to the daytime beauty it already has. One of the best yard lighting ideas is to place small lamps or lanterns evenly and symmetrically throughout a landscaped area to provide areas of brilliance at night. Many of these accent outdoor yard lights are even solar powered, so they are very easy to install and will not cost any extra on your electric bill.

Lights Outdoor

Other popular outdoor yard lighting ideas include using walkway or path lights. Their main purpose is to provide illumination to a sidewalk or path at nighttime. Although the primary reason is for function, they can also be decorative as well, showing the outline of a walkway from a distance.

Many common yard lighting ideas focus on adding light to gardens. They can be used to help define the garden area by being placed around the perimeter of it. Outdoor yard lights can also make the garden visible during the night hours so that it can be faintly seen. Flower gardens look especially nice with outdoor yard lights because the colors of the flowers can appear different from how they look during daylight.

Outdoor Decor and Camping Lights

Home décor, as well as outdoor lighting, and lights for camping and other vacations have been improving technologically at a rapid pace. From camping lanterns to outdoor lighting for your home, many considerations must be made by the individual making the purchase. Whether you want keep up with all of the latest technology is one matter to keep in mind.

It is actually amazing that we have defined sound theories that prove the rapid increase of technological ability in the future. It is an often welcome surprise of the electronic age that we know, but it makes current technological equipment predictably obsolete. How do we get around that? That means that you will have to replace your laptop, ipod, computer, and even your outdoor lighting on a consistent basis. This is true especially if you want to be more efficient with your use of electricity and are aware of its effects on the environment.

Lights Outdoor

So firstly, consider the look of your landscaping and the lighting that will create the ambiance you desire. Then consider cost verses rising technological advances. How soon will you need to replace your lights? Which lights are more cost-efficient? Which lights, such as outdoor furnaces, heaters etc, will be obsolete sooner and which will last longer for you?

Some people choose to purchase outdoor yard, garden, or patio heaters that use a lot of electric power and will probably become more cost-efficient (as well as efficient overall) in a couple of years. If you have a new, high quality camping lantern that you are thinking of buying, consider how much room you have to carry it, as well as how much light it will provide. You may want to choose a smaller size of a camping or outdoor table lantern. Batteries as opposed to gas operated outdoor furniture or equipment, as well as taller or shorter lights, larger or smaller lights, or the amount of light provided and the amount of time that (if portable) the lights will work. Some people have problems with the noise level of outdoor lighting equipment. Because of modern technology, there are many kinds of lighting equipment and accessories for a quieter source of light.

Someone should also (and especially) consider the safety of the lights they choose. For example: there are outdoor furnaces that are unlikely to cause problems, they are virtually as safe as fire pits. The most important thing to remember is to pour water over the ashes. Sometimes this kind of outdoor fire place or furnace will safely go out on its own. There are also many furnaces with glass doors you can close tightly when you go indoors, ensuring significantly less risk of fire.

These kinds of outdoor lighting equipment are so old-fashioned that they are unlikely to become obsolete. They will continue to work the same as always and effectively as always. Therefore, consider outdoor furnaces when you look around for outdoor lighting. Try LED lighting as well. Have LED lights, as backup lights, is a great idea. As a matter of fact, LED lighting outdoors (as long as you do not need bright light) is wonderful. It will be long lasting and great for the environment. Nonetheless, there are many different kinds of outdoor lighting products to choose from on the market right now.

However, this is not much a problem because there are many lighting materials that just require you to plug them in and they start working. In the past, it was usually an expensive undertaking to decorate your home. This is because you may need to get the services of a professional, that is an electric contractor, to set up the lights outside your house. However, this is no longer required. With the new outdoor Christmas lights, all you need to do is just plug in the light into a socket and you have a light. Moreover, they can be gotten from your local suppliers at a quite cheap price.

One particular use of outdoor Christmas lights is with Christmas trees. A well lit Christmas tree is a beautiful sight to behold. Everyone loves them especially kids. They are not just lovely, they also adds extra beauty to your house. To decorate them, it is best to use electric lights. You can either use the lights on trees you built or use artificial trees. Either way, the effect is a stunning one.

So where is the best place to get the lights? Outdoor Christmas Lights are everywhere especially during the Christmas festival. You can easily get them from your local suppliers. Depending on the type of light, you may opt to install them yourself or let the electric contractors take care of them. The set-up may even come as a free service or cheaply depending on the amount you are spending. The internet is also a good place to buy the outdoor lights. With the number of providers available, it is easier to browse through the sites to get the best bargain. The set-up may however not be available if you buy from a supplier not in your neighborhood.

If you opt to install the light yourself, then there are safety precautions to take. Some of the precautions to take are: use only the wires intended for the purpose; if you are using old lighting materials, then ensure that the wire has no open spot; place the wires as far as possible from water or snow; and some others.

Outdoor Christmas lights are sure to provide you and your family with a lot of excitement. However, your safety should be considered too.

More Complicated Crafts

There was a popular children's toy in the 1970s that specifically dealt with lights. You can imitate this on a large scale as an exciting outdoor Christmas lights craft project. Basically, you will need a small drill, tons of Christmas lights, a hot glue gun, and a very large piece of plywood.

First, you'll need to paint the plywood. The second step will be to draw whatever you want to outline with lights. The next step is to drill holes that are far enough away from each other so the structure is not compromised. Put the lights through the holes and keep them in place with the hot glue. The end result is a personalized outdoor decoration.

Save Money This Christmas With Outdoor Solar Christmas Lights

The new trend in Christmas lighting is LED Christmas lights. LED Christmas lights are becoming popular indoors, because they don't get hot like the old tree lights. LED lights also don't use very much electricity, almost none at all, and they don't ever burnout.

Solar powered Christmas lights are LED lights powered by a solar panel. Solar lights come with a stake you stick in the ground and on top of the to and a stake is it rechargeable battery pack with a solar panel on top of that. The sun shines on solar panel it keeps the batteries charged the power of the batteries is enough to light the LED string of lights.

Lights Outdoor

One nice thing about solar powered Christmas lights is that they have a photocell that detects when it's dark out and they turn themselves on all by themselves.

Since these lights run off of rechargeable batteries, how bright they get, and how long will stay on, depends on how well the batteries are charged. If you place the solar collector panel in a well lit area on a bright sunny day that should be enough to recharge the batteries. With fully charged batteries your life should stay on for 10 to 15 hours. If you have a string of overcast days with not too much sunlight the batteries can become depleted and your life will be dimmer and won't stay on as long.

Another thing to consider when buying solar powered outdoor Christmas lights is the climate that you live. December is usually a very snowy time of the year for most people and you will have to keep the solar panels free from snow or the batteries wont charge.

LED Christmas lights are fairly new product so you may be slightly limited on your choices. From what I've seen on some popular Internet sites this should not be too much problem. I've seen solar Christmas wreaths, white solar rope lights, white icicle lights, white net lights, and a variety of colored lights to choose from. One neat product I saw was a solar window candle.

So if you're interested in solar powered Christmas lights do some research on the Internet. You'll probably have to buy them online also because not too many stores are stocked with a good variety are of these type of lights. Be aware of the drawbacks solar powered lights depend on sunlight.

Outdoor Party Lights for Your Pool Party

Have you ever been sitting out by the pool in the evening enjoying the company of friends, and gradually it got so dark that your good time together just came to an end? It doesn't need to. Be prepared with different ways to chase away the darkness and illuminate your outdoor party area.

Pool Party Lights

Lights Outdoor

Illuminate your outdoor party with floating candles, patio umbrella lights, outdoor torches, and solar string lights. Place different kinds of lights in different areas. We use strings of lights on the arched gated entry to our pool, glass tiki torches along the ledge of our stone wall and on the steps to the pool, candles are lit for the patio table, floating lights are in the pool and tall solar lamps are in the ground near the eating area.

Outdoor String Lights

String them along your deck, fence, trellis, gate or arbor. Thanks to battery operated and solar led string lights, you can place them anywhere even if you don't have access to electricity. These decorative string lights can be found in many styles and shapes such as a dragonflies, stars.

Patio Umbrella Lights

Add light to your patio umbrella with solar powered lights or battery powered umbrella lights. The battery powered ones provide enough illumination to play cards or a game at night to keep the party going.

Paper Lanterns

Individual paper lanterns and paper lantern string lights are always associated with a good time and a great party. We keep these on hand for parties just because they add such a festive atmosphere. You can hang them from trees, your patio umbrella, or string them along your porch or lanai. Most of them take triple A batteries. So we keep lots of batteries on hand.

White paper lanterns provide a more elegant feel while colored lanterns are more festive.

Outdoor Torch

An outdoor torch or yard torches illuminate your pool or outdoor party area and can help keep bugs away. You can choose from many styles. Bamboo torches lends are best for a more Hawaiian or luau themed party. Many metal torches are rust resistant and can be left out year round. There are several different styles and places to put an outdoor torch. They can be staked in the ground, set on a rock wall or steps, or clamped onto a deck railing.

How to Use Patio Umbrella Lights With Low Voltage

One of the more clever forms of patio lighting there is, is what is known as umbrella lights. A lot of us have patio umbrellas and when you think about it, they make excellent stands for a bit of lighting. Especially with the type of umbrella which is combined with a table (round table with the umbrella in the middle, typically), patio umbrella lights make a lot of sense. You can get several designs which simply clamp to the umbrella pole; some are solar panel powered, others come with batteries. Both can be nice enough - although they may not provide as much light as you would like. No matter how those batteries are charged - from a solar panel or via mains voltage - they have to be fairly large to provide any real light power for a usable amount of time. But if you want some more light, and you don't usually move your umbrella around a lot, there is another option for you.

Low voltage lighting is just the thing. Yes, most solar - and battery driven umbrella lights are also low voltage lights. The difference is not in the voltage, but in the available electric current. Batteries can store only so much power in watts, and watts are electric current over time. The more watts you spend, the faster you discharge the battery. Now, a good, strong source of light would be something like halogen bulbs, or some of the more powerful LED arrays. These like to be fed some current though, so batteries are not practical. Instead, you could use a low voltage lighting transformer to power them. This would give you all the power you could want, since the transformer is connected to mains voltage. So if you chose 12v bulbs, you would need a 12v transformer. You could power any amount of bulbs with it - just buy one powerful enough. It wouldn't give in, until your fuses do.

Lights Outdoor

How would you go about the installation in a practical way? Basically, there are two paths. One is to mount the low voltage transformer close to the light fixtures, like at the base of the umbrella. In that case, you would run a mains cable to the foot of your umbrella. The other way is to put the transformer further away, like in a waterproof box under the patio - or elsewhere. This way, you might get away with using a much thinner cable running to the umbrella, a cable you might hide under a carpet - or simply route directly down through a hole in your patio floor. Which one you choose is up to you. Perhaps you also have other lighting installations on your patio requiring low voltage, which could make it practical to have a single, large transformer - and then run cables from that.

If well-planned, your patio umbrella lights could become part of a large, flexible and energy efficient lighting system, which would make a lot of jaws drop. Why not go for it?
