Using Outdoor Flood Lights for Fun or Security

Spending time outside after dark can be a lot more enjoyable with the proper lighting. Outdoor flood lights, however, aren't always the best choice. Much depends on the activity you plan to do at night. Sports and other things that require you to be able to see very well, such as you can during the daytime, are good candidates for things like flood lighting. If you're having a garden party or gathering on your patio, then more subdued lighting is probably in order.

Flood lights are a good choice for heightened home security. These lights can be set to come on when they detect motion from something large like a person so that they don't go off every time a small nocturnal animal skitters past. Whether you use these lights for security or for fun outdoor activities, there are some things to consider before you install them.

Be sure to consider where they will shine while they're on before you install them or have them installed. Will they be shining in the neighbor's window, for instance? This can become a nuisance and can cause problems between you and your neighbors. So make sure that you tilt it in such a way that it shines on your yard and not beyond it.

You'll also want to make sure you get a light that allows you to adjust the sensitivity of the motion detector, if you choose one for security purposes. If you can't adjust the sensitivity, you could find it blinking off and on all throughout the night as animals, leaves and sometimes even heavy rainstorms can set them off.

Choose the type you purchase carefully when you're shopping for outdoor flood lights. Some have one bulb while others have two or three that are situated at angles to cover a wider area. You might be able to find one fixture that can illuminate almost your entire yard if you choose one that has two or three bulbs and shades.

If you're really serious about home security, don't forget outdoor flood lights that have special features in them like infrared cameras. These are perfect if you already have a floodlight and you're having security issues. You simply change out your regular light for a model with an infrared camera inside the light. This allows you to see video of your outdoor spaces so you can keep an eye on your doors, windows, vehicles or yard. It's just one more option to consider when you're shopping for security lighting.
